About Second Avenue United Methodist Church
and What We Believe...
Second Avenue UMC is part of the United Methodist Church which is a 12.3-million-strong global church that opens hearts, opens minds and open doors through active engagement with our world. The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Second Avenue provides the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs in a specific geography, Rome, GA. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Rome is the largest city in and the county seat of Floyd County, Georgia. Second Avenue is a loving Christian fellowship in which members are trying to know Christ Jesus on a personal level and making Christ known in the world through a personal touch.
We go all the way back to 1890: Howard Avenue Methodist was organized and chartered in 1890, and Bishop Keener sent the Rev. J. E. Rorrie as our first pastor. When Howard Avenue became Second Avenue in 1909, the church also changed its name to Second Avenue Methodist Church.
John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as "practical divinity" has continued to be a hallmark of Second Avenue United Methodist Church!
